Winter 2012
MESSAGE FROM OUR PRESIDENT
Elizabeth Blashka

January Meeting
David Little, Director of Governmental Relations at NYSSBA, was with us at our January 4th meeting in Goshen.  As usual, David delivered much pertinent information about the upcoming legislative sessions.  He outlined NYSSBA's lobbying efforts, spoke about the new members of his team at NYSSBA, and talked about the upcoming legislative sessions in Albany and Washngton.  As usual, he was well received by our attending members, and we found his presentation comprehensive, informative, and quite interesting.  Once again, he reminded us that he is, indeed, a truly an outstanding member of the NYSSBA leadership team.
David gave us direction about our legislative priorities and our efforts during the upcoming legislative sessions.  He encouraged us to determine the financial number each of our districts must reach to comply with the cap on the tax levy.  We should then construct a list of programs/services that we could reduce/eliminate.  He encouraged our members to discuss this list with our unions and explore ways to work together to preserve the integrity of our programs.  It would then be up to our boards to present this information to their communities as clearly and simply as possible.  District newsletters would be an excellent vehicle to get this information to all of our stakeholders.  He suggested strongly that this be done as soon as possible and as frequently as possible.
